Boutin Shines In Boston With New School Record

BOSTON, Mass. - Emily Boutin highlighted another excellent weekend for the Navy track and field teams by breaking the program record in the 5,000m at the Boston University David Hemery Valentine Invitational on Friday in Boston, Mass.

The senior clocked in a time of 16:06.25 to beat her own school record by 13.11, which she set in 2023. She finished in 25th place out of 104 athletes.

Ellie Abraham ran in the mile in Boston and placed 99th out of 318 competitors with an ECAC qualifying time of 4:52.07.

Murphy Smith, Sam Keeny and Alexander Kirkland competed in the 3,000m that featured 145 athletes. Smith placed seventh in his heat and 20th overall with a time of 7:57.47, which ranks sixth all-time in school history. Keeny posted the ninth-fastest time in Navy history (7:59.53) to place second in his heat and 25th overall. Kirkland ended in 11th place in his heat and 85th overall with an IC4A qualifying time of 8:14.42.

"Emily (Boutin) and coach (Kim) Lewnes had a great week of training and an excellent game plan heading into this meet. Emily is a tremendous leader and leaving Boston with another school record shows resilience on her part," said Director of Track and Field / Cross Country Jamie Cook. "She has had to deal with injuries this season, but she has come back better and stronger. Really happy to see her produce the way she has this season and looking forward to seeing her in the Patriot League Championship."

The remainder of the mids competed in the Darius Dixon Memorial Invitational, hosted by Liberty, on Friday and Saturday at the Brant Tolsma Indoor Track in Lynchburg, Va. The meet did not have team scoring.

"Going from a dual-meet format to a big invitational was an adjustment, but the team handled it very well. This is more of the nature of track and field in this day in age and we have to be prepared to see a lot of people competing at conference in a few weeks. There were a lot of positives at this meet from Brahmir (Vick) and Jia (Anderson) excelling again in the 60m hurdles to a lot of our younger athletes setting new personal bests in multiple events. Everyone is improving across the board and that's really exciting," said Cook. "Getting more race-ready was the objective this weekend and we did a great job in executing our race patterns and plans. Going forward we're going to focus on figuring out what is best for each athlete for them individually and the team. The coaching staff has done a tremendous job all season and we want to continue our success with a strong final few weeks."

Brahmir Vick was the top performer in Lynchburg thanks to another stellar performance in the 60m hurdles. He won the event with a time of 7.74, which tied his team record that he recorded last week against Army.
